Independence Weekend Camping Trip (UNPLUGGED) | Chippokes Plantation State Park

A peaceful shoreline with Cypress trees silhouetted against the late sky.

Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.
— George Washington Carver

It's time for one of our favorite events of the year: Independence Day Camping Trip (UNPLUGGED)!!

This year, we have chosen a campground that is not as far away as previous years (though it was a struggle to not go back to the best campground on the planet). It is a rural location less than 1.5 hours away in Surry County, VA. Situated on the southern/western side of James river, across from Jamestown is the beautiful Chippokes Plantation State Park. Here's the description from the park's website:

Just across the James River from historic Jamestown in beautiful Surry County, Chippokes Plantation is one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the country. A working farm since 1619, the park offers modern recreational activities and a glimpse of life in a bygone era. Visitors tour the historic area with its antebellum mansion and outbuildings, stroll through formal gardens, and view antique equipment at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum. A campground and four overnight cabins allow visitors to stay on the historic grounds. The park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a visitor center with a gift shop. It also provides opportunities to bike, hike, ride horseback and picnic.

Schedule of Events:

It was a little tricky to plan this one since we have church on Sunday and Independence Day is on a Monday this year, but I think we've worked out a good plan:

  • Friday, 6PM – Leave from church building
  • Friday, 8PM – Set up Camp
  • Saturday – Camping Fun ALL DAY, Fishing, Hiking, etc..
  • Sunday, 8AM – Get showered up and leave for Sunday Service in VA Beach
  • Sunday, 1PM – Head back to the campsite
  • Monday, 3PM - Checkout from Campsite

We will be back in Virginia Beach in plenty of time for you to go see fireworks! We want to encourage as many people as possible to join us for this well-needed escape from the hindrances (and the comforts) of the 21st Century:

God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars.
— Author unknown, commonly attributed to Martin Luther

The cost to attend this great trip is

$15 per adult, $10 per child.

Later Event: September 2
[LATE NIGHT] Preach @ the Beach
